This is for all the fellow lawyers and writers who use AI to augment their research and drafting.

Recently, OpenAI released GPT-4.5. It is being hailed as the best model for chat yet. But do you really need it? If initial responses are examined, it would be revealed that it is nothing more than a better paraphraser than its predecessors. I am not demeaning GPT-4.5 in any manner, but at such a steep price ($75/1M tokens), it does not make any sense to get its subscription.

There are so many other LLM tools available in the market, like Grok-3, Perplexity, etc., that do the same thing at a fraction of the cost. As a lawyer, I draft my petitions, applications, and legal documents and thereafter use AI to fine-tune the drafts. We all know that the current state of LLMs is nowhere near perfection and is mostly unreliable for end-to-end results. Ultimately, the human mind is much more efficient in understanding the nuanced needs of our society.

GPT-4.5 has been launched, and there is news that DeepSeek has come up with another model, namely 3FS, that sips through the internet in a humongous manner. Do not waste your hard-earned money on buying these trigger-happy subscriptions. Learn to use AI and LLMs in an efficient manner, and you can get desirable results from any basic LLM model.

The jugglery of words that these LLMs provide is nothing short of ridiculous. Endless paraphrasing does not contribute to anything. What lawyers and writers need is novelty in a manner that actually affects the outcome of a situation. None of the LLMs available in the market are good at case-law research. All of them generate fake or irrelevant citations. Similarly, they are equally bad at finding quotations from articles and books. Most of the time, they misinterpret and make a mockery of the entire process. Also, AI-generated writing has proliferated so much that it has actually become quite impossible to discern AI text from a human-generated one.

Just hold on; wait a few months. As I had stated earlier in one of my articles, all these so-called LLM models are going to become completely free. If after that you feel like buying a hefty subscription, then you may go for it, depending on your needs.

I will post more on this issue in the times to come.
