Tech gurus and visionaries claim that the future of abundance and autonomy is here. But what does autonomy actually mean? In plain English, autonomy means having the right and power to self-govern without interference. It is being said that the machines are getting autonomy. A great live example is Tesla’s Robotaxi that rides without any human intervention. All you have to do is request your ride with the Robotaxi app, enter the destination, and confirm your ride. It will come up at the designated pickup location; then you open the door, enter the vehicle, and tap ‘Start Ride’ in the Robotaxi app.

It sounds like science fiction but is real. Tesla’s Robotaxi is currently being offered in Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, Florida, and Austin, Dallas, and Houston, Texas.

However, Tesla’s Robotaxi is not the only autonomous vehicle framework making the headlines. Nvidia has also launched its framework called Nvidia Alpamayo for reasoning-based autonomous vehicles. The crazy thing about Nvidia Alpamayo is that it is an open and transparent AI. Anybody can inspect, extend, and fine-tune the technology to meet their requirements. Nvidia calls this an open reasoning VLA model. VLA stands for vision-language-action. These reasoning VLA models pretrain on a wide range of tasks to develop general knowledge and perceptual grounding. The purpose is to break down complex tasks into manageable sub-problems, enabling the model to solve them accurately. They have visual perception (cameras, radar, lidar, etc.), language understanding, and decision-making that produces interpretable reasoning traces.

Recently, Nvidia has also launched Alpamayo 2 Super, which goes a step further and allows developers to deploy AI models without requiring additional permissions. The open weights make sure that developers can build on without paying frontier-model costs and match the right models to the right job at the right cost.

Nvidia has been at the forefront of promoting open-source/open-weight AI models. It clearly has a long-term vision that no other company has. It will not be an exaggeration to state that the entire AI revolution is based on the foundations of computing laid down by Nvidia. Nvidia seems to be getting too little credit here. Everybody is busy praising OpenAI and Claude for the kind of AI models they release, but few realize that in 2016, it was Jensen Huang, the co-founder and CEO of Nvidia, who delivered the first DGX-1 to Elon Musk that actually started the entire AI race. Since then, the AI industry has not looked back and has been riding on the exponential growth wave that seems to have no end in sight.

In fact, people like Jensen believe that the future of autonomy and abundance has just begun. It is important to note here that the terms ‘autonomy’ and ‘abundance’ seem to be connected because there cannot be abundance without any autonomy. Unless machines become autonomous and start doing the majority of human tasks, a post-scarcity society cannot be shaped where there is no dearth of goods and services, and the marginal cost of all goods and services eventually approaches near zero.

The only constraint in the future will be tonnage and wattage. Here by tonnage, it is meant the amount of semiconductor chips that we are able to manufacture that can increase the level of compute, and by wattage, it is meant the amount of energy of the Sun that we can harness in a meaningful manner to do compute.

I am an optimist here, and I too firmly believe that the chain of events that have transpired in the last few years have put us, humanity, on an unstoppable track. Barring a few events such as an asteroid hitting Earth, or a world-war-level event, there is no chance that the future of abundance and autonomy can be halted.
